Our Fragile Climate
Sarner selects Alcorn McBride for new climate exhibition

Our Fragile Climate is the latest major visitor attraction to feature design and engineering input from UK-based company Sarner. Located at the Norwegian Glacier Museum in Fjaerland, the interactive installation takes visitors on a journey through six zones that illustrate the past, present and future effects of climate change. Equipment specified during the ambitious build included controllers from AMX and Alcorn McBride, Mitsubishi video projectors and Community loudspeakers, writes David Davies.

In development for nine months and opened recently by former US vice-president Walter Mondale, the exhibition incorporates translation for three languages, although Sarner has now been commissioned to increase this to nine. Beginning with a trip back to the creation of the earth - accompanied by images of crashing meteors and molten lava - the exhibition takes visitors on to the tertiary jungle, where visitors get to experience the greenhouse effect in a hot, humid jungle. Other areas depict the last ice age and the future, part of which depicts a more positive scenario of how the world could be in 2100 if the necessary action is taken.

Providing overall control are an AMX NetLinx system and Alcorn McBride V16+ show controller, the latter utilised to trigger all manner of sequential events, from lighting to sound effects. A specification rich in Alcorn McBride equipment also includes the company's Binloop player (used to relay MPEG-2 encoded video and phase-locked surround audio), AmpTraXX audio amplifiers and, to enable accurate lighting control, a DMX Machine.

Other equipment utilised includes multiple Mitsubishi XD1000 video projectors, KIND Audio KDL Series amplifiers and Community loudspeakers.

"This was a great project for us as we worked on it from conception through to completion, combining our full design consultancy with our expertise in technical engineering and show production," Sarner managing director Ross Magri told II. "Climate change was a challenging message to communicate and we had to ensure that the exhibition educated visitors in an entertaining way. We have delivered a uniquely interactive attraction that has the endorsement of one of the world's most acclaimed broadcasters and naturalists, Sir David Attenborough."
